Acupuncture
For chronic pain in the lumbar spine and knees
SBK covers the cost of acupuncture treatment at qualified medical practices for the treatment of chronic pain in the lumbar spine and knees. Acupuncture involves stimulating specific points with fine needles in order to harmonize energy flow and release blockages.
How does acupuncture treatment work?
Acupuncture originates from traditional Chinese medicine and is based on the idea that life energies circulate in the body along specific pathways. These pathways are also known as meridians. Since a disturbed energy flow can cause illness, acupuncture involves stimulating specific points on the meridians with fine needles. This method has proven particularly helpful in the treatment of chronic pain.
Which costs are covered by SBK?
Acupuncture treatment has been proven to be effective for chronic pain in the lumbar spine and chronic knee pain caused by gonarthrosis (osteoarthritis of the knee joint) and is therefore covered by us.
You can receive up to ten acupuncture sessions, which should take place within a maximum of six weeks.
In medically justified exceptional cases, this can be increased to up to 15 sessions within a maximum of twelve weeks. Repeat treatment may only take place at the earliest twelve months after completion of acupuncture treatment.
SBK does not cover the costs of treatment by alternative practitioners or private medical practices. This rule applies to all statutory health insurance funds.
