Care support allowance

Financial support for family carers

The care support allowance is an income replacement benefit that you receive if you are unable to go to work because you are caring for a family member. We continue to pay part of your gross salary. The condition is that you are caring for a family member who is insured with SBK. This allows you to focus fully on organising the care.

  • What are the eligibility criteria for the care support allowance?

Care support allowance – your benefits

  • We support you in organising care – even at short notice, if required. For example, if a family member suddenly requires care following a hospital stay.
  • We will obtain your income details directly from your employer – there’s no need for you to do anything in this respect.
  • What are the eligibility criteria for the care support allowance?

  • In the event of a sudden care situation involving a family member, every working person is entitled to a care support allowance for a maximum of ten working days per year – regardless of the size of their employer’s business.
  • The person in need of care must be insured with SBK. We pay you, as the carer, a care support allowance – so that you can organise the care.
  • If the person requiring care is insured with another health and care insurance fund, that fund is responsible.
  • The entitlement applies on a calendar-year basis for each person requiring care. It can be divided among several people who share the short-term care.
  • You will only receive the care support allowance if you do not receive a salary during this period. If your employment contract includes a provision for continued pay in such care situations, you will not receive the care support allowance.
  • How much is the care support allowance?

The care support allowance amounts to 90% of the lost net pay. One-off payments such as holiday pay or a Christmas bonus can increase the care support allowance to up to 100%. The care support allowance amounts to a maximum of €135.63 per calendar day for the year 2026 (2025: €128.63).

We deduct your contributions to health, pension and unemployment insurance before paying out the care support allowance and transfer them, together with the SBK’s contribution shares, to the relevant insurance provider.

How to claim the care support allowance:

  • Working carers can apply for the care support allowance from the health and care insurance fund of the person requiring care – using an application form and a medical certificate.
  • Please send both by post to SBK. You can find our address and a prepaid envelope here. Once we have received the earnings statement from your employer, payment will be made to you immediately.
  • We are happy to assist you with your application for the care support allowance.
