Social security in care

For private carers

Under certain conditions, SBK pays contributions towards unemployment and pension insurance for private carers. Private carers are people who provide care to a person in need of care on a non-commercial basis in their home environment.

    Social security – your benefits

  • As a carer, you are covered in a special way.
  • The payment of pension insurance contributions increases your pension entitlement.
  • The SBK Long-Term Care Consultation Service can help you with any questions regarding social security in care.
  • What are the eligibility criteria for the payment of pension insurance contributions

  • You regularly care for one or more people with care levels 2 to 5 on at least two days a week and for more than ten hours a week.
  • You provide care on a long-term basis (more than two months) and on a non-commercial basis.
  • In addition to providing care, you are not employed or self-employed for more than 30 hours a week.
  • You are not yet receiving a full old-age pension and have not yet reached the standard retirement age.
  • What are the eligibility criteria for the payment of unemployment insurance contributions?

  • You regularly care for one or more people with care levels 2 to 5 on at least two days a week and for more than ten hours a week.
  • You provide care on a long-term basis (more than two months).
  • You are not employed or self-employed.
  • You do not receive unemployment benefits or transitional allowance from the Federal Employment Agency.
  • You were in employment subject to compulsory insurance or were receiving unemployment benefits until immediately prior to commencing care work.
  • How to obtain unemployment and pension insurance contributions:

  • The person in need of care submits an application for long-tem care insurance benefits to your care insurance fund.
  • As part of a personal assessment of the person in need of care in their home environment, the Health Insurance Medical Service determines the amount of time required for care at home and registers the private carers.
  • As soon as we have received the Health Insurance Medical Service’s report, we will send you – as a private carer – a questionnaire regarding pension and unemployment insurance obligations.
  • If all the contributions are met, you are automatically entitled to insurance.
  • How much are the contributions?

The amount of the contributions depends on the care level and the type of benefit received (care allowance, combined benefits, benefits in kind) by the person in need of care.
