Entitlement to care benefits
Requirements and benefits provided by the SBK Long-Term Care Fund
You can rely on SBK not only in the event of illness, but also if you require long-term care. As a member of SBK, you are entitled to all the benefits provided by long-term care insurance. You automatically benefit from the cover provided by the SBK Long-Term Care Fund – regardless of whether you have voluntary, statutory or family insurance.
What are the eligibility criteria for care benefits?
How is the need for care determined?
A person’s need for care is determined by assessing six areas, known as modules.
In each module, points are awarded that are incorporated into an overall assessment with different weightings (as a percentage). For modules 2 and 3, only the module with the higher score is used for the assessment. Depending on the total score determined, the person is classified into one of five
| Modules | Weighting |
| 1. Mobility This module assesses physical mobility – for example, whether the person concerned can independently, without the support of another person, change their body position (e.g. whilst lying down), maintain a stable sitting position or move around the home unaided. | 10 % |
| 2. Cognitive and communicative abilities Only abilities relating to comprehension and speech are taken into account here. This module assesses whether the person concerned can find their way around their environment, recognise people in their immediate surroundings, choose clothing appropriate to the weather or carry out actions in a purposeful manner. 3. Behaviour and psychological issues This module assesses whether and how often conspicuous behaviour such as a tendency to wander off or aggressive behaviour (verbal and/or physical) occur as well as resistance to care measures and delusions, and thus whether support from another person is required in these situations. | together 15 % |
| 4. Self-care This module assesses independence in carrying out activities relating to personal hygiene (e.g. bathing, dressing, combing) and direct food intake (drinking, eating). | 40 % |
| 5. Coping with and independently managing requirements and stresses related to illness or therapy This module assesses how independently a person can carry out medically prescribed measures, such as taking medication or administering injections, and whether accompaniment to therapy sessions or doctor’s appointments is required. The decisive factor here is how frequently support from another person is required. | 20 % |
| 6. Organisation of daily life and social contacts This module assesses, for example, how independently a person can organise their daily routine and maintain social contacts. | 15 % |
As part of the assessment, impairments to independence and functional limitations are also identified in modules 7 and 8. However, these modules do not contribute to the overall assessment of the care level.
