Maternity Pay

During the so-called protection period before and after childbirth you will receive maternity pay from SBK

We pay you maternity pay for the duration of the protection period. This is the time during pregnancy and after childbirth when you are not required to work. The protection period begins six weeks before the birth and ends eight weeks after. In the case of premature births or multiple births, the protection period after delivery is extended to a total of 12 weeks.

Maternity pay – your benefits

  • We already have your income details or will request them directly from your employer - so you don’t need to worry about this when applying for maternity pay.
  • Whether your child arrives a bit earlier or later: we will automatically adjust and extend the protection period for you.
  • If you submit the “Certificate of the Expected Date of Delivery” before the birth, we can immediately pay out the maternity pay for the period before delivery.

Entitlement: How much maternity pay are you entitled to?

As an expectant mother, you are eligible to receive maternity pay from SBK if you are employed at the start of the protection period. The amount is based on your net income and is capped at €13 per day. If needed, your employer will cover the difference to match your previous salary.

If you were registered as unemployed before giving birth, you are entitled to maternity pay equal to your unemployment benefits.

Self-employed women who are insured with entitlement to sickness benefits will receive maternity pay in the amount of their sickness benefit.

If you have any questions, please contact your SBK consultant.

    Applying for maternity pay

SBK helps you claim your maternity pay and supports you throughout the application process. To ensure everything goes smoothly, please inform us of the expected due date no earlier than seven weeks before the birth. You will receive a free certificate confirming the expected date of delivery from your doctor’s office or your midwife.

    Maternity pay: submitting important certificates

Before the birth: Your doctor’s office or midwife will issue you a certificate called the “Certificate of the Expected Date of Delivery.” Please complete this form and send it to us to apply for maternity pay. We will then transfer the maternity pay for the period before the birth.

After the birth: You will receive a birth certificate or birth confirmation with the note “Maternity Assistance” from your local registry office. In the case of premature or multiple births, your doctor’s office will also issue an additional certificate free of charge. Please submit this to us as well so we can calculate and pay out your full entitlement to maternity pay.

You can easily upload all documents via the Meine SBK app. Alternatively, you can complete the back of the “Certificate of the Expected Date of Delivery” and send it to us by mail. You’ll find our address and a prepaid envelope here.

    Maternity pay after miscarriage:

Women who experience a miscarriage from the 13th week of pregnancy onwards are entitled to maternity protection and maternity pay. Depending on the week of pregnancy, different protection periods apply:

  • From the 13th week: 2 weeks of maternity protection
  • From the 17th week: 6 weeks of maternity protection
  • From the 20th week: 8 weeks of maternity protection
  • During these protection periods, employers are not allowed to require affected women to work. Exceptions are only permitted if the woman expressly agrees to return to work.

During this time, women are entitled to maternity pay, just as they would be after a regular birth. SBK is here to support you through this sensitive time.

Insurance coverage for mother and child

Frequently asked questions about maternity allowance

You are entitled to maternity allowance if you are employed at the beginning of the protection period, for example, as an employee or mini-job worker.

You will also receive maternity allowance from us if you are receiving unemployment benefits or are self-employed and insured with entitlement to sickness benefits.

The maternity allowance is based on your net income.

Employees, trainees, marginally employed persons, and voluntarily insured persons with entitlement to sickness benefits receive up to €13 per day in maternity allowance. Your employer will top up the difference to your net salary.

Recipients of unemployment benefits receive maternity allowance equal to their previous unemployment benefit.

Self-employed persons who are entitled to sickness benefits at the beginning of the protection period receive maternity allowance in the amount of the sickness benefit.

During your maternity protection period, you will receive maternity allowance from us, usually for a total of 99 days: six weeks (42 days) before the birth, on the day of delivery (one day), and eight weeks (56 days) after the birth.

Did you have a premature or multiple birth? Then the maternity protection period after the birth is extended to twelve weeks. This also applies if your child is diagnosed with a disability within eight weeks after delivery. In this case, you are not allowed to work for twelve weeks after the birth.

Please send us the original certificate from your doctor in such cases.

We transfer your maternity allowance directly to your bank account. You will receive two payments in total: one before the birth and another afterward. This ensures that you are financially well protected during your maternity leave.

For the payment before delivery, simply submit the certificate from your doctor’s office or midwife with the expected delivery date.

For the payment after delivery, we need the birth certificate or birth confirmation of your child.

During a work prohibition, your employer continues to pay you your usual salary without interruption. From the beginning of the maternity protection period, you will then receive maternity allowance from us.

You can easily fill out the required family questionnaire online, either directly here or in My SBK. We are happy to assist you if you need help.
