Midwife care
For a secure feeling right from the start
A midwife is a valuable support for expectant parents during pregnancy, childbirth, and the first weeks afterward. As a pregnant woman, you have a legal right to midwife care. SBK covers the costs for this. Additionally, we support you with other strong extra benefits, such as a subsidy for midwife on-call services.
How a midwife supports you before and during birth
Pregnancy counseling
A midwife is a knowledgeable and trusted person for all the questions that concern you as an expectant mom. Whether it’s about healthy nutrition, exercise during pregnancy, or possible discomforts—your midwife is there with helpful tips and information.
Prenatal Checkups
Your midwife can perform almost all the prenatal checkups listed in your maternity record. The exception is ultrasound examinations, which are reserved for gynecologists.
Preparation for birth
A childbirth preparation course with a midwife is important and valuable to prepare yourself as best as possible for delivery. There, you learn helpful techniques and breathing exercises for the birth of your child. This already creates a sense of security during pregnancy.
Choosing the birthplace
Whether in the hospital, a birthing center, or at home - a midwife advises you on where you would like to give birth.
Support during cirth
A midwife is especially important during labor. Your entire birthing process is supported by the experienced midwives at the hospital or birthing center. This way, you and your child are always in safe hands.
On-call availability
Additional security can come from the midwife’s on-call availability. Your midwife is available for you around the clock between the 37th and 42nd week of pregnancy. We subsidize this private service with €300.
Your midwife will continue to be there for you after the birth
Care of the newborn
Right after birth, your midwife performs the initial examination of your child. In the following period, she monitors the physical development of the newborn and ensures the healthy healing of the umbilical cord. Usually, your midwife supports you for up to 12 weeks after birth.
If there are feeding difficulties, counseling is possible up to nine months after birth. If challenges with breastfeeding arise, your midwife will be by your side until the end of the weaning phase.
Support for the mother
Your midwife also plays an important role in your health. She monitors all healing processes, supports breastfeeding, and is the right contact person regarding postpartum recovery.
Information about well-child checkups
After birth, there are important preventive examinations (well-child checkups) for your child. Your midwife will be happy to explain what to expect.
Emotional support
Your midwife also offers emotional support. The first days and weeks after birth can be challenging for you and your little family. After pregnancy, mothers’ hormones adjust again, which can lead to mood swings. Your midwife is there for you in this situation as well.
Furthermore, it often takes some time for your new daily routine to settle in. This is normal and completely okay. Your midwife helps you to manage this new situation well.
