  • Frequently asked question

Each statutory U-examination has a recommended time frame.
In addition, there are legally defined tolerance periods that extend the actual examination window. For example, the U5 is recommended during the 6th to 7th month of life. However, due to the legal tolerance limits, the U5 can be performed from the 5th to the 8th month of life. Within this tolerance period, your doctor’s office can bill the examination via your SBK healthcare card.

If you miss this time frame, your doctor can still perform the examination, but it can no longer be billed via the SBK healthcare card. In that case, you would need to pay for the examination privately. If you have missed a time frame, it’s best to speak with your doctor’s office to find out whether they still recommend having the examination done.

In general, the STIKO (Standing Committee on Vaccination) specifies time frames in which vaccinations should ideally be given to ensure the best possible protection. Some vaccinations are no longer recommended after a certain age because the risk of disease becomes very low or the vaccine’s effectiveness decreases with age.

If a vaccination was missed at the recommended age, it can often still be administered later. This especially applies to vaccines where basic immunization and initial boosters should ideally be given during infancy or early childhood. Although these vaccinations are scheduled early, they can still be administered and billed via the SBK healthcare card up until the day before the child’s 18th birthday (with the exception of pneumococcal, Haemophilus influenzae type b, and rotavirus vaccines).

Important: After the 18th birthday, many vaccinations are no longer covered by statutory health insurance and cannot be billed via the SBK healthcare card if you’re older. Therefore, always pay attention to current vaccination recommendations and the appropriate timing. The vaccination calendar from the Robert Koch Institute provides a helpful overview.

The recommendation from the Standing Committee on Vaccination (STIKO) is: “Every vaccination counts.” If multiple doses are required for immunization, the series can be completed with the remaining doses. Even if the recommended intervals between doses have been exceeded. In most cases, there is no need to restart the entire series. If the interval between two vaccinations was not maintained, it’s best to discuss the appropriate next steps with your vaccinating doctor’s office.
