Vision training for amblyopia
The online vision training program for children with functional visual impairment
“See better through play!” is the name of an online vision training program developed by Caterna for children with amblyopia. Children aged 4 to 12 can improve the vision in their weaker eye through special online games and exercises. This program is an additional benefit offered by SBK.
Amblyopia means functional visual impairment
Amblyopia is a functional visual impairment: while the eyes themselves are healthy, the brain has difficulty processing the visual signals from one eye. The most common cause of amblyopia is strabismus (crossed eyes). To avoid double vision, the brain suppresses the input from one of the eyes. Unequal visual acuity between the two eyes can also lead to amblyopia. The underused eye becomes functionally weaker. If left untreated, amblyopia is usually irreversible in adulthood and may result in reduced depth perception, which relies on both eyes working together.
During routine U-checkups (preventive medical screenings for children in Germany), the development of a child’s vision is monitored from an early age. If signs of amblyopia such as strabismus are noticed, the ophthalmologist performs further tests to assess visual acuity, refraction, eye movement, and coordination.
Once amblyopia is diagnosed, treatment starts by addressing the underlying causes — for example, prescribing corrective glasses. To train the weaker eye, the stronger eye is typically covered using a patch. This is called occlusion therapy. While this can be uncomfortable for children at first, as their vision is temporarily limited, improvement is usually noticeable quite quickly.
The “See better through play!” program
For some children, patching alone isn’t enough. In these cases, “See Better Through Play!” offers an ideal addition. The online program features a moving stripe pattern on the screen that stimulates the weaker eye. The training is designed to be playful and engaging so children enjoy the process and are motivated to practice regularly.
The recommended duration is 90 days, during which your child completes the training at home on a computer or tablet. The ophthalmologist oversees the treatment both online and during in-person appointments. A companion app also helps with scheduling.
The training is available to children aged 4 to 12 who have been diagnosed with amblyopia and have not shown sufficient improvement through standard occlusion therapy.

What costs does SBK cover?
SBK covers 100% of the cost for this vision training as an additional benefit. The ophthalmology practice bills SBK directly. Presenting your child’s SBK healthcare card at the practice is sufficient.
