Rehabilitation treatment

The best way to regain strength after surgery or a long illness

Rehabilitation supports you as you recover from an illness, surgery, or injury. It helps you gradually regain your confidence and strength for everyday life. During rehabilitation, or rehab for short, you receive targeted therapies and opportunities to be active. In addition, you receive individualized care during rehab.

Rehabilitation - your benefits

  • You receive high-quality therapies in our contracted clinics.
  • We cover the costs of your rehabilitation.
  • We organise your rehabilitation stay, a suitable rehabilitation facility and an admission date for you.
  • You can fully focus on your rehabilitation.
  • Types of Rehabilitation

In general, we distinguish between medical rehabilitation and follow-up rehabilitation.

  • Medical rehabilitation supports you if you have a chronic illness. It helps to relieve symptoms and enables you to enjoy life more again.
  • Follow-up rehabilitation helps you return to everyday life, especially after an acute illness or surgery. It takes place immediately after an inpatient hospital stay.
  • Both types can be provided on an outpatient or inpatient basis, depending on medical necessity.

    Cost bearers

In principle, the following institutions may be responsible for covering the costs of rehabilitation:

  • The German Pension Insurance covers the costs if you are employed.
  • Accident insurance covers the costs if you require rehabilitation due to an accident.
  • We cover the costs if you are neither employed nor undergoing rehabilitation as a result of an accident.
  • Application

Rehabilitation must always be applied for in advance. Before submitting an application, it is best to talk to your doctor. In this consultation, you will find out whether and when rehabilitation is suitable for you.

For medical rehabilitation, the application process differs depending on the cost bearer:

  • If the German Pension Insurance is the cost bearer, you can easily apply for rehabilitation via its online portal. If you have any questions about the application, please contact the free service hotline of the German Pension Insurance: 0800 1000 4800
  • If accident insurance is the cost bearer, please contact your company doctor, a certified accident doctor, or your treating specialist practice.
  • If we support you with rehabilitation, you will receive the application directly from your doctor’s practice. You can submit this application digitally via Meine SBK or send it to us by post. We will take care of your application and inform you of the result afterwards.
  • If it is follow-up rehabilitation, the hospital’s social services department will assist you with the application.

Coverage of costs for treatment, travel, accommodation and meals

We cover the costs of medically necessary treatment and meals. For inpatient measures, we also cover the costs of your accommodation. We also contribute to the costs for up to two pieces of luggage.

Regulations depending on the means of transport (for outbound and return journeys):

  • Public transport: full reimbursement of costs
  • Private car or taxi: partial coverage of costs
  • Transport service provided by the rehabilitation facility: full coverage of costs
  • For reimbursement or direct coverage of the costs, please send us the form enclosed with the approval letter along with any available travel receipts. Information about the transport service will be provided together with the approval letter.

    Co-payments

Depending on the cost bearer and the type of rehabilitation, a personal contribution may apply. This co-payment applies to persons aged 18 and older when we are the cost bearer:

  • Outpatient rehabilitation: co-payment of €10 per day. If outpatient rehabilitation lasts longer than 42 days, the co-payment is limited to 28 days.
  • Inpatient rehabilitation: co-payment of €10 per day. If inpatient rehabilitation lasts longer than 42 days, the co-payment is limited to 28 days. Arrival and departure each count as one day.
  • Follow-up rehabilitation: co-payment of €10 per day for up to 28 days. Hospital co-payments within a calendar year are taken into account.
  • If the German Pension Insurance is the cost bearer for your rehabilitation, different co-payment regulations apply.

With our co-payment calculator, you can quickly and easily find out the maximum amount you need to pay in co-payments per year.

If you have already made many co-payments in a year, it may be worthwhile to apply for co-payment exemption. More information can be found on the co-payment exemption page.

    We support you after rehabilitation

Once you are back home, it is important to apply what you have learned in your everyday life. Rehabilitation sports and functional training, for example, can help you with this. We are happy to help you find the right programs for you. Simply contact your personal SBK consultant. You can find the contact details here.
