Therapeutic Treatments

To enhance your personal well-being

Therapeutic treatments include physiotherapy, podiatric treatments, speech therapy, and occupational therapy. These are medical services that require a doctor's prescription and are carried out by specially trained therapists. In the list of therapy providers published by the GKV-Spitzenverband, you will find all currently approved therapeutic practices.

Therapeutic treatments - your benefits

  • Save yourself the trouble of getting your individual prescriptions approved: with your doctor's prescription, you can go directly to the therapy practice and receive treatment there.
  • The costs for the treatments are settled directly with us. You only have to pay the statutory co-payment yourself.
  • The most common treatments are:

Physiotherapy: Physiotherapy includes, among other things, therapeutic exercises, lymphatic drainage, massages as well as heat and cold applications. Medical professionals have the option of issuing a so-called blank prescription. Depending on the indication, the therapist then decides on the selection of therapeutic remedies. He or she also determines how frequently the treatment takes place and how long it lasts. This new regulation initially applies only to conditions affecting the shoulder joint.

Speech therapy: Speech therapy treats, among other things, voice, speech and swallowing disorders, for example stuttering.

Occupational therapy: Occupational therapy supports and assists people of all ages who have difficulties with everyday activities due to illness, disability or age. The aim of occupational therapy is to increase the independence of those affected. The goal is to enable them to cope with daily life at work, school and within the family as independently as possible. Medical professionals have the option of issuing a so-called blank prescription. Depending on the indication, the therapist then decides on the selection of therapeutic remedies. He or she also determines how frequently the treatment takes place and how long it lasts. This new regulation initially applies to diseases of the spine, joints and limbs (with motor-functional impairments), including certain mental disorders as well as addiction-related and dementia-related conditions.

Podiatric therapy (foot care): Podiatric treatments are intended to prevent pathological changes to the foot as a result of diabetes mellitus, neurological diseases and spinal cord damage. The therapy includes, for example, the treatment of thickened calluses or toenails. Medical foot care is provided by licensed podiatrists. The treatment of an ingrown toenail is also a statutory benefit. It can be carried out in podiatric facilities as well as in outpatient medical practices (predominantly in the field of surgery).

    Long-term need for therapeutic treatments

The long-term need for therapeutic treatments applies to individuals who require treatments like physical therapy, speech therapy, or occupational therapy due to severe functional or structural physical impairments.

Prescriptions for long-term therapeutic treatments are generally only possible for specific, severe conditions, such as congenital malformations or cancer.

If it is medically determined that your condition does not fall under these severe categories but your limitations could be comparable, we are happy to review your application for long-term therapeutic treatments.

You can easily submit your application for long-term therapeutic treatments online. Use the Meine SBK app or the web version at meine.sbk.org. This way, your application will reach us immediately, saving you both time and postage.

Even without our confirmation of long-term therapeutic needs, treatments can still be prescribed by your doctor if they are medically necessary. In this case, the prescription will follow the usual process, without the need for long-term therapeutic treatment approval. Always consult with your doctor's office regarding your personal therapeutic needs.

If you have further questions, please feel free to contact your personal SBK consultant. You can find their contact details here.

What costs does the SBK cover?

The SBK covers the costs of medically necessary treatments. Your practice will bill us directly for the costs of treatment. You are only responsible for the statutory co-payment, which amounts to 10% of the costs plus €10 per prescription. You pay your co-payment directly at the therapy practice.

Remedies for children and young people up to the age of 18 are generally free of charge.

    How to obtain therapeuthic treatments:

  • Your doctor will issue a prescription for you if a therapeutic treatment is required for your condition. The prescription is governed by the so-called "Heilmittelrichtlinie" (Therapeutic Treatment Directive), which regulates the prescription of therapeutic treatments. The number of therapy sessions depends on the type and severity of the condition.
  • With your prescription, you can go directly to an approved therapist of your choice. No approval from us is required. After each treatment session, you will confirm the treatment by signing the back of the prescription at the practice. You can search for therapeutic practices in your area on the Heilmittelerbringerliste (List of Approved Providers) on the website of the German National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Funds (GKV-Spitzenverband).
  • The costs of the treatment are billed directly by the therapeutic practice to us. You only pay the statutory co-payment for your treatment.
  • Would you like to apply for long-term therapeutic treatments?

You can submit your application anytime via Meine SBK.
