Accident at kindergarten or school
What you need to consider after your child has had an accident
Your child is covered by statutory accident insurance while attending a daycare center or school. This insurance coverage is free of charge for you and is paid for by the states, municipalities, and municipal associations.
What is covered?
Accident insurance coverage applies during attendance at nurseries, after-school care centers, kindergartens, schools, or universities. Daycare facilities must have official recognition and provide care, education, and upbringing for children. Coverage applies to general and vocational schools, both public and privately operated. Children in early intervention centers or special care facilities within children’s or residential care homes are not covered.
Children are also covered during excursions and events organized by the respective institution. This includes travel between the child’s home and the institution or the event location. The mode of transport used does not affect coverage. Likewise, whether the child caused the accident themselves does not affect their accident insurance protection.
What should be considered?
After an accident, the supervisor decides, based on the type and extent of the injury, whether first aid is sufficient or whether a doctor should be called. Children with minor injuries who require medical attention but are likely to need only short-term treatment should be taken to the nearest doctor.
In the case of more serious injuries that are likely to require more than a week of treatment, an accident insurance consultant is responsible. In the case of obvious eye, throat, nose, or ear injuries, specialized medical treatment can be sought directly.
