Colon cancer screening: further examinations
Information on personalised healthcare services (IGeL) for colon cancer screening
In addition to statutory preventative check-ups such as stool tests for 50- to 54-year-olds and colonoscopy for those aged 55 and over, so-called personalised healthcare services (‘individuelle Gesundheitsleistungen’, IGeL) are offered for early detection. These include, for example, the combined stool test or capsule colonoscopy. They are not recommended as screening for early detection in healthy people by the Federal Joint Committee (G-BA), which determines the services covered by statutory health insurance. Therefore, statutory health insurance cannot cover these services; the patient must pay for them privately. Each person must make their own individual decision whether they wish to undergo the examination. In order to make an informed decision, it is important to clarify all essential questions about the examination and weigh up the possible advantages and disadvantages. We provide you with an overview of the most important information about these additional examinations.
