Ultrasound on the abdominal aorta
All information on this preventative check-up
Around 2% of all men between the ages of 65 and 75 develop an aneurysm of the abdominal aorta. An aneurysm is a thickening of the artery that can rupture if it becomes too large. This usually does not cause any symptoms at first, so the person affected does not notice anything. An ultrasound of the abdominal aorta as an early detection screening offers the chance to detect an aneurysm at an early stage and treat it accordingly.
Men aged 65 and over are entitled to an ultrasound scan of the abdominal aorta. The reason for this is that the risk of an abdominal aortic aneurysm is higher in men in this age group than in women.
