If a child's father, mother, or both parents die, children, adolescents, and young adults receive orphan's pensions, provided that the deceased parent paid into the statutory pension insurance scheme.
Orphans and half-orphans receive this financial support until their 18th birthday or until their 27th birthday, as long as they are still in school or vocational training, for example. To receive this support, half-orphans or orphans must submit an application to the pension insurance fund. A half-orphan's pension is paid if one parent is still alive, and a full orphan's pension is paid if both parents are deceased. Biological or adopted children of the deceased, stepchildren, and foster children who lived in the household of the deceased are entitled to an orphan's pension.
If you receive an orphan's pension, you are required to pay into the health insurance scheme for pensioners (KVdR) on the basis of this pension – without having to fulfill a previous insurance period.

Important to know
You can apply to have your contribution to the orphan's pension reimbursed up to the amount of the student health insurance contribution.
If you are employed, undergoing vocational training, or receiving benefits from the Employment Agency in addition to receiving a pension, you are insured as an employee, trainee, or recipient of unemployment benefits. Mini-jobs and working student jobs are excluded from this.
