A university education marks a new chapter in life, one that not only brings new knowledge but also new topics—such as health insurance. We support you with all questions related to insurance and contributions during your studies, so you can focus on what truly matters.

    Until your 25th birthday, you are usually covered under your parents’ health insurance for free while studying. This is convenient because you save on contributions, as long as your monthly income does not exceed €565. With a mini-job, you can even earn up to €603 per month and still benefit from free family coverage.

    The Student Deal

    If free family coverage is no longer an option for you—for example, because you are over 25 years old or your income exceeds the €565 limit—you can take out the affordable student health insurance. This is available until the end of the semester in which you turn 30.

    The basis for the student contribution is the BAföG requirement rate.

    *Persons aged 23 and over who are covered by statutory insurance pay a surcharge of 0.6% for nursing care insurance. This surcharge does not apply if proof of parenthood is provided.

    Frequently asked questions about student insurance

    Simple via direct debit:
    You authorize us through the online portal Meine SBK to set up a direct debit, and we will automatically deduct your contributions from your account on time. Alternatively, you can also grant us authorization via a SEPA direct debit mandate.

    The contributions must be credited to the SBK Account by the 15th of the following month at the latest (e.g., contributions for January are due by February 15th).

    To enroll at a university or college, you must be covered by health insurance. You can inform us via Meine SBK which university or college you plan to enroll at. We will take care of all the formalities directly with your university, so you don't need to worry about anything else.

    We will send the enrollment office of the university a notification confirming your insurance. The university will also confirm your enrollment to us digitally. Alternatively, you can ask your personal SBK consultant for this. Contact details can be found in Meine SBK or in the SBK Consultant search.

    In Meine SBK you can manage many tasks 24/7 from home, such as requesting an insurance confirmation for your university or college, participating in the bonus program, and much more. You can also sign up for online mail in Meine SBK to stop receiving paper mail from us, which helps us save paper and support the environment together.

    Yes, it's easy via the app. Download the Meine SBK app, take a picture of your enrollment certificate with your smartphone, and send it directly to SBK. This saves you time and postage.

    Do you want to work while studying to earn some extra money or gain practical experience? This may affect the type of health insurance you need and, in some cases, require you to pay contributions.

    If your job is subject to mandatory health insurance, your employer will register you with us for health and long-term care insurance and pay the contributions directly. Your share of the contributions will be deducted from your gross salary. For mandatory employment, pension and unemployment insurance contributions are also paid.

    If you have a job that does not require mandatory health and long-term care insurance, it can still affect your type of insurance and contribution amount. For example, if you earn more than €565 per month, we will check whether free family coverage can continue.
