With the European Health Insurance Card on the back of your SBK healthcare card, you are entitled to all immediately necessary treatment in accordance with the legislation of the respective country. This applies in EU countries, EEA countries and Switzerland. If a doctor does not accept the card and issues a private invoice, you will need to pay upfront. If you then submit the invoice to SBK, you will be reimbursed up to the amount that would have been incurred for the same treatment in Germany. What does this mean for you? If the doctor charges more than is customary in Germany, you must cover the remaining costs yourself. For greater security, we therefore recommend the private travel health insurance offered by ERGO Krankenversicherung AG at a special rate for SBK customers.

Medical services incurred in countries without a social security agreement such as the USA cannot be covered by a German statutory health insurance fund. In this case as well, we recommend taking out private travel health insurance.
