Trainees and pupils
Contribution Information for trainees and pupils
As a school pupil, you are usually covered under your parents' health insurance. However, once you begin your vocational training, action is required. During your apprenticeship, you are typically insured in the same way as an employee.
Contributions to Health and Long-Term Care Insurance for School Pupils and Apprentices in 2026
For pupils and students
As a pupil or student, you are usually co-insured free of charge with your parents’ health insurance until your 25th birthday—but only under certain conditions. You can read in detail under family insurance whether you meet these conditions. If family insurance is not possible for certain reasons, you can also insure yourself with us.
Holiday jobs
Are you planning a holiday job between your time as a pupil and your vocational training? Then please make sure to take out health insurance before starting the holiday job. You are very welcome with us! If you only work the holiday job during school holidays and earn no more than €603 per month, nothing changes for you. If your earnings exceed €603, you are considered an employee.
School internships
During a school internship, you usually remain co-insured with your parents. This also applies to other internships for pupils—as long as you earn no more than €603 per month.
Trainees
With the start of your professional career, it’s time: you take out your own health insurance.
The contributions you pay for long-term care and health insurance during your vocational training are calculated based on your income. The contribution rate at SBK is 18.4%, half of which is paid by your employer.
The contribution rate for long-term care insurance is 3.6%. From the age of 23, the contribution rate for (long-term care) insured persons without children increases by 0.6 percentage points to 4.2%, of which your employer pays 1.8%.
Your training company transfers the contributions directly to us. Contributions for pension and unemployment insurance, which are also initially transferred to us, are forwarded immediately to the responsible insurance institution. If you want to calculate your individual contribution, you can use the practical contribution calculator.
If you earn no more than €325 during your training, you do not pay contributions. In this case, your training company covers the entire contribution for you.
Example calculation
Assume your monthly training allowance is €600. In this case, your health insurance contributions at SBK would be as follows:
