Voluntary insurance

Information about contributions for voluntary health insurance

Are you neither an employee, student nor pensioner? Even if you do not belong to any of these groups, you can still take out insurance with us as a voluntary member or automatically remain insured after the end of an insurance policy, for example due to the end of employment. This means you benefit from comprehensive and seamless insurance cover as well as the strong benefits and personal advice provided by SBK.

Your benefits with SBK:

  • Our special services for voluntary insurants: we are happy to advise you on whether your tariff really is the right one for you and will send you regular reminders to submit your income tax assessment.
  • Regardless of the amount of your contributions, you are fully entitled to all SBK benefits. Compensation benefits may be excluded from this.
  • If your total income exceeds the contribution assessment ceiling, no supporting evidence is required to determine your contributions.
  • Contributions to health and nursing care insurance

    Assessment basis

The contribution as a voluntary member is based on your income up to the contribution assessment ceiling of €5,512.50 per month. If your income is lower, your contributions for voluntary insurance are based on the amount of your actual income. The lower limit for calculating contributions is €1,248.33 per month.

This means that in 2025 you will pay contributions from an income of:

  • at least €1,248.33 per month and
  • a maximum of €5,512.50 per month.
  • Contributions to health care insurance

From 01.08.2025, the reduced contribution rate is 17.8% (incl. SBK supplementary contribution) and the general contribution rate is 18.4% (incl. SBK supplementary contribution). Whether you pay the reduced or the general contribution rate depends on the type of income you have. So if you have different types of income, you may pay the reduced contribution rate on one part of your monthly income and the general contribution rate on another part. You can find out which income is used to calculate contributions here.

    Contributions to nursing care insurance

The basic contribution rate for nursing care insurance is 3.6%. This applies to insured persons with one child or insured persons under the age of 23.

Insured persons with two or more children receive relief depending on the number of children. For each child under the age of 25, the basic contribution rate is reduced by 0.25 percentage points. You can find a list of contribution rates according to the number of children here.

For insured persons over the age of 23 and without children, the contribution rate is 4.2%.

What income is used to calculate contributions?

Income subject to contributions includes all income used for maintenance, such as:

  • Income from self-employed work
  • Income from part-time work
  • Pensions and benefit payments, such as workplace pensions
  • Income from renting and leasing
  • Income from capital assets, such as returns from interest and dividends
  • Maintenance payments from a separated or divorced spouse
  • Once a year we will ask you about your income situation in order to calculate the contributions to be paid.

If your spouse or partner is privately insured, their income is also used to calculate the contributions.

What proof of income is required?

Supporting evidence includes, for example, income tax assessments, payslips and account statements.

    Paying contributions

You can simply set up a direct debit for your contributions. To do so, send us a direct debit authorisation via your personal online self-service branch, Meine SBK. We will then debit your contributions from your account on time, every time. Alternatively you can give us a SEPA direct debit mandate. Please contact your SBK consultant to do so.

Or you can transfer your contributions yourself. Please note that your contributions must be credited to our account by the 15th of the following month at the latest. For example, contributions for January must reach our account by 15 February at the latest.

Please transfer your contributions to the following bank account:
