SBK electronic patient record (ePA)

Your health information at hand at all times

With the electronic patient record (ePA), you have all information concerning your health, such as doctor’s letters, medication plans and results, with you at all times. This happens in the SBK-Patientenakte app. You can also share your data e.g. with doctors’ practices, pharmacies and hospitals. You decide who is permitted to see your data. At the start of 2025, every person in Germany with statutory health insurance will automatically be given an electronic patient record (in German the "ePa für alle"). The ePA is voluntary – you can object at any time.

The ePA – your benefits:

  • You can keep an eye on all your health data at all times.
  • Quick emergency help, because all the important information is immediately at hand.
  • You decide which data you would like to save and share.
  • You save valuable time, as duplicate check-ups are avoided.
  • Important health passports, such as your vaccination record, are with you at all times.
  • Long-term support, as new functions are continuously added to the ePA.
  • What is the ePA?

The ePA saves all your important health data safely and digitally. You therefore have access to doctor’s letters, medication plans and results at all times. You choose who you share your data with on an individual basis. You can easily keep your current doctors up to date by giving them access to your ePA.

The “ePA für alle” (ePA for everyone) is part of the Digital-Gesetz (digital act) and is intended to facilitate high-quality care and simple communication. The ePA also offers you a selection of functions. These will be continuously developed, improved and enhanced for you over the coming years.

You can already use these functions with the ePA

  • Show and manage medical documents
  • Save your own documents in one place
  • Receive information about services
  • Determine representation
  • Your doctor can set up these documents:

  • Emergency data
  • Dental bonus booklet
  • Electronic certificate of vaccination
  • Electronic maternity record
  • Child examination booklet
  • Electronic medication treatment plan
  • How to use the ePA:

The ePA for everyone is created automatically for you. To use your ePA with the SBK-Patientenakte app, please download the app and identify yourself.

Please note: the app is only available in German right now.

The ePA is a particularly protected platform for your sensitive data. That is why a multi-stage registration process is very important.

Managing the ePA for other people

Would you, as a parent, like to manage the ePA for your underage children or support others in setting up the ePA? In the ePA app, up to five people can be added as representatives. Anyone can do this with a verified ePA app – relatives, friends, mentors and insurants of other health insurance providers. Important changes are documented so that it is always transparent who has performed which action.

You can set yourself as a representative for your own children and therefore see and maintain all important documents. To do so, you need to identify yourself as a legal guardian once at an SBK branch.

Frequently asked questions about the ePA:

Here you will find a selection of the most important questions on the ePA.

At the start of 2025, every person in Germany with statutory health insurance will be given an electronic patient record (ePA). It saves information about your health, such as medical findings and prescriptions, safely and digitally in one place. The ePA provides doctors with an integrated view of your health and protects you against duplicate treatment and incorrect medication, for example, meaning you receive quick help in an emergency, too.

Please note: the legal start date for the “ePA für alle” is 15.01.2025. It will take around four weeks until the ePA is created for all those covered by statutory insurance. We therefore ask for your patience if you are unable to access your ePA immediately at the beginning of January.

The “ePA für alle” is part of the Digital-Gesetz (digital act), which came into force in March 2024. The aim of the ePA is to guarantee high-quality medical care. This is achieved by allowing all those involved in healthcare to communicate easily.

You manage the ePA securely and conveniently in the SBK-Patientenakte app. Here, you can view, delete and even share information concerning your health. You decide who has access to which data and for how long. You can therefore grant your GP practice permanent access and a specialist clinic access for one day only.

Only you can decide who has access to the data in your ePA. For example, you can authorise a practice by using your SBK healthcare card on-site. Or you can stipulate in the SBK-Patientenakte app who gets access and for how long. You can also view your ePA yourself via the SBK-Patientenakte app. Technical-infrastructure operators and health insurers are unable to read or remove any data.
