1. Complete declaration of accession

You have two options: you can simply complete the declaration of accession online – or call us on 0800 072 572 587 00 (free of charge within Germany). By the way, using our online form you can include your family members in your insurance at the same time free of charge.

Once we receive your membership application, we will contact you to clarify any questions and let you know when your SBK membership will start.

2. Inform your employer or university

Once you know when your SBK membership will start, you just need to inform your employer or university that you will be switching insurers. We will happily do this for you if you wish.

Useful information:
As of 1 January 2021, it is no longer necessary for customers with statutory health insurance to cancel their existing insurance when they switch providers. The old and new health insurers will liaise directly with each other to complete the switch for you – so you can sit back and relax.

Tips and useful information about switching providers

We’ve compiled useful tips and information about switching health insurers here for you:

: Yes. You can only switch health insurers after 12 months of membership with your old provider, and you have to observe a notice period of two full calendar months.
For example, if you wish to become an SBK member on 1 July, you must submit your membership application to us by no later than 30 April.

: If your old health insurer is imposing or increasing the additional contribution rate for the first time, you have a special right of termination regardless of the duration of your membership. The notice period of two full calendar months applies in this case as well.

: Any time you switch employers, you have the opportunity to choose SBK as your new health insurer within two weeks of starting employment that is subject to statutory insurance coverage. This is also the case if your status changes – if your insurance cover changes from family insurance to student insurance, for example. The notice period of two months does not apply in these cases.
