The right amount for you: our contributions for trainees
As you start out in your career, you’ll get an extensive service package with everything you need. This package includes, among other things, an attractive bonus scheme, travel vaccinations and advice, sports medicine examinations and your SBK consultant who is always there for you. We are also available around the clock when you’re out and about – through your personal online self-service branch Meine SBK.
All of this is included in your tariff. Your contribution amount depends on your income. You basically only pay contributions for health insurance if your training salary exceeds €325.
The contribution rate for statutory health insurance is currently 14.6% and the additional contribution for SBK is 3.8% – making 18.4% altogether. Of that, your employer pays half.
Sample calculation
Assuming that your monthly income as a trainee is €600, your insurance contributions with SBK would be like the following:
Health insurance: €600.00 x 9.2% = €55.20
Nursing care insurance: €600.00 x 1.8% = €10.80
Total per month: €66.00
Your employer’s contribution is automatically deducted from your salary, so you can lean back and relax and don’t need to worry about anything else.
In short, social security comprises five different areas. In addition to health insurance, there is also accident insurance, nursing care insurance, pension insurance and unemployment insurance. As a result, social security covers a lot of topics in the areas of workplace accidents, nursing care and unemployment.
As a trainee, you are especially vulnerable from a social security perspective and therefore are required to get social security cover – and this applies regardless of whether you receive a salary or not, by the way. In the case of trainees receiving a salary of €325 or less, the employer will cover the full costs of social security.
